Water for Construction Sites in Dubai: Sweet, Salt and TSE

By WaterLink Team · Published · Updated

What water does a construction site in Dubai need?

Construction sites in Dubai use sweet (potable) water for workers, welfare units, concrete mixing and curing, and salt (non-potable) water only for soil compaction, dust control and site roads. Salt water must never be used in reinforced concrete. Villa plots usually take a 2,500-gallon sweet water load daily; bigger sites need bulk 5,000–10,000-gallon supply.

Why salt water must stay out of concrete

Salt water contains chlorides that corrode the steel reinforcement inside concrete, leading to cracking and structural damage over time. The American Concrete Institute advises against seawater in reinforced concrete. Use sweet water for mixing and curing. Keep salt water for earthworks and dust.

Why they come in different trucks

Dubai Municipality’s guideline requires sweet water tankers to carry sweet water only. A tanker that carries salt water to your site can’t legally bring sweet water to your workers the next day. That’s why WaterLink delivers sweet water in its own sweet-water-only tanker and arranges salt water through separate partner tankers.

How much water does a site need?

It depends on the stage of work, the number of workers and the weather. As a planning guide:

  • Villa plots: often one 2,500-gallon sweet water load daily or every few days, plus salt water during earthworks.
  • Mid-size sites: several loads a day, or 5,000–10,000-gallon tankers.
  • Earthworks phase: salt water use peaks during compaction.

Dubai’s construction activity is strong — Dubai Municipality reported permits up about 20% in the first half of 2025 — so book regular supply early in busy periods.

Bulk water supply: planning tips

  1. Fix a daily or weekly slot. Regular slots are easier to plan around truck restrictions (for example, trucks are banned from Sheikh Zayed Road 6 am–10 pm from 1 October 2026).
  2. Size the site tank to take a full load, so one delivery lasts.
  3. Separate sweet and salt storage and label them clearly.
  4. Keep one supplier and one invoice for easier cost tracking. See monthly water supply contracts.

TSE water

TSE is recycled wastewater, treated for non-drinking uses and used in Dubai mainly for irrigation. If your project specifies TSE, tell us the volume and site and we’ll confirm whether a partner can supply it. It’s never carried in a sweet water tanker.
