Sweet Water vs Salt Water Tankers in Dubai

By WaterLink Team · Published · Updated

What is the difference between a sweet water and a salt water tanker?

A sweet water tanker carries fresh, potable water for homes, pools and people. A salt water tanker carries non-potable water for compaction and dust control on construction sites. Dubai Municipality says sweet water tankers must carry sweet water only, so the two must always be separate trucks.

Definitions

Sweet water is the Gulf term for fresh, potable water — water fit for drinking and household use. In Arabic: مياه حلوة or, in everyday Gulf speech, ماي حلو.

Salt water (non-potable water) is water that is not fit for drinking. On Dubai construction sites it is used where water quality doesn’t matter for people.

The rule: sweet water tankers carry sweet water only

Dubai Municipality’s Technical Guidelines for Quality of Unbottled Drinking Water (DM-HSD-GU17-DW2) say sweet water tankers must not be used for any other purpose, must be filled only at approved filling stations, and must be clearly marked in Arabic and English.

That’s why a responsible supplier never sends the same truck for sweet water one day and salt water the next. At WaterLink, our own tanker carries sweet water only. Salt water orders go to separate partner tankers.

What to ask your supplier: Is this tanker used only for sweet water? Where was it filled? Can I see the filling receipt?

Why salt water isn’t for concrete

Salt water contains chlorides, which corrode the steel reinforcement inside concrete. The American Concrete Institute advises against using seawater in reinforced concrete. Use sweet water for mixing and curing; keep salt water for compaction and dust.

Which one do you need?

  • Filling a villa tank, building tank or pool → sweet water.
  • Drinking, cooking, washing or welfare units on a site → sweet water.
  • Compacting fill or keeping dust down on a site → salt water.
