DEWA Water Shutdowns: How to Prepare

By WaterLink Team · Published · Updated

How do I prepare for a DEWA water shutdown?

Find out the shutdown time and length from DEWA, check how much water your tanks hold, and make sure they're full before it starts. If the outage will outlast your stored water, book a water tanker in advance for the time you expect to run out. WaterLink delivers 24/7 from 200 gallons; call DEWA on 991 if an outage is unplanned.

Planned vs unplanned shutdowns

  • Planned shutdowns happen when DEWA or a master developer works on the network. Affected customers and communities are usually told in advance. Check the DEWA app or website, and your community notices.
  • Unplanned outages happen after a pipe burst or fault. Call DEWA on 991 to report it and ask for an estimate.

Step 1: Know how much water you have

Your stored water is what keeps you going. Find the capacity of your underground and rooftop tanks (see villa water tank sizes), and check the current level.

A rough guide: add up what your household uses in a day — showers, toilets, washing, kitchen. If you don’t know, watch your tank level over a normal day before the shutdown.

Step 2: Fill up before it starts

Make sure your tanks are full the night before. If mains pressure is low and the tank fills slowly, a small tanker top-up the day before can make sure you start the outage full.

Step 3: Cut use during the outage

  • Shorter showers; no baths.
  • Run the washing machine and dishwasher only when full — or wait.
  • Pause garden irrigation and car washing.
  • Keep some bottled water aside.

Step 4: Book a tanker in advance if you’ll run short

If the shutdown will last longer than your stored water, book the tanker ahead for the time you expect to run low. That’s easier than ordering when every neighbour needs water at once.

  • Tell us the date, time and your location pin.
  • Tell us your tank size and how much you’ll need.
  • We confirm today’s price and a delivery slot.

We deliver 24/7, from 200 gallons to a full 2,500-gallon load.

Step 5: After the water comes back

  • Run taps for a minute to clear air from the pipes.
  • Check the float valve refills the underground tank normally.
  • Watch for cloudiness — usually air or stirred sediment, which clears. If the water stays discoloured, contact DEWA.

For buildings and facility managers

Shutdowns affect every flat at once. A pre-agreed tanker arrangement — rates agreed in advance and priority dispatch — saves a lot of last-minute calls. See facility managers and scheduled supply.

If a shutdown catches you with an empty tank, we can send a sweet water tanker near you any time, day or night.
