What Is “Sweet Water”? A Guide for New Dubai Residents
By WaterLink Team · Published · Updated
What does “sweet water” mean in Dubai?
“Sweet water” is the Gulf term for fresh, potable water — water fit for drinking and household use. In Arabic it's مياه حلوة or, in everyday Gulf speech, ماي حلو. It's the opposite of salt (non-potable) water. A “sweet water tanker” delivers potable water to villa tanks, buildings, pools and sites.

Sweet water simply means fresh water that’s fit to drink — the opposite of salty sea or ground water. You’ll hear it all over the Gulf, in English and Arabic:
- مياه حلوة (miyah helwa) — sweet water
- ماي حلو (mai helu) — everyday Gulf Arabic
- مياه صالحة للشرب — water fit for drinking
So a “sweet water tanker” and a “potable water tanker” mean the same thing. It is tanker water for your tank, not bottled water.
Where Dubai’s water comes from
Dubai has very little natural fresh water. Most of the water in your taps is desalinated sea water, produced and distributed by DEWA through the mains network. That’s why you’ll rarely need a tanker if your mains supply works well.
When you’d order a sweet water tanker
- Supply outages — planned DEWA work or a burst pipe. See DEWA water shutdowns.
- Empty tanks — after cleaning, a leak, or when moving into an empty villa.
- New pools — filling a pool from a hose can take days.
- No mains connection — construction sites, desert camps, events.
- Businesses — car washes and cafeterias with small tanks.
Sweet water vs salt water
| Sweet water | Salt water | |
|---|---|---|
| Drinkable | Yes | No |
| Used for | Homes, pools, people, site welfare | Compaction and dust on construction sites |
| Tanker | Sweet-water-only tanker | Separate tanker |
Dubai Municipality’s guideline says sweet water tankers must carry sweet water only. So sweet and salt water should never share a truck. More: sweet water vs salt water tankers.
Tips for new residents
- Learn where your tanks are — underground and rooftop — and roughly how big they are.
- Save DEWA’s emergency number: 991.
- Save a tanker number before you need it. WaterLink runs 24/7 on WhatsApp: +971 52 954 4015.
- Ask any tanker supplier whether their truck carries sweet water only and where it was filled. See is tanker water safe to drink?
